I've recently been trying the Facebook Ads approach and although i got $100 of free ads to try the service out, i must admit that the actual traffic and interest you gain is rather minimal. For this sort of advertising, especially with Facebook you really need to be sure that the product is something that Facebook users will actually buy - there are so many random crap ads on the network at the moment! Personally if the $100 hadn't been free, it would have been better spent on Adwords and would have reached a much, much larger target audience!

Mikes last blog post - LG BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

Nice list of strategies to kick start your online business. What I have discovered over the years that works best for me is using PPC for immediate results while you work on link building to get them naturally.

Forums, Blogs, and articles are great for online-word-of-mouth marketing. They are also a fun, creative way to interact with many types of people, as well as focus on your target audience.

Great point regarding the long tail. I really should get around to targeting some rather specific product. I know I should, but I can't quite seem to get around to it. :O

Thanks Jack,

Although this won't get me any traffic, it explains why I'm getting none. lol

The only one of those I use is article writing and that produces no traffic at all - for me, that is.

PPC is like flushing money down the toilet - great for tax write offs, so I've heard.

Facebook doesn't deserve a comment - lol

Press Releases sound good but only gurus are likely to sell more than $80 worth of their own product.

This is still the only blog I visit on a regular basis - no forums - shudder!

Mitch,
Excellent observation. :)

When I was writing the article, I was focusing towards affiliate marketers and product owners with static websites. I wasn't actually thinking in terms of those who monetize with a blog.

A missed plug on my part, LOL. In my opinion, a blog should be the center piece of any online business. This post should have started out with the line - "If you don't have a blog yet, stop reading, go out & set up a blog and then come back and read the rest".

Yes! Absolutely. Blog Carnivals have made all the difference in my SE rankings, and Xingla Pro speeds up the process a hundred fold.

Thanks again for pointing that out!

I'm surprised you didn't mention Blog Carnivals and your software Xingla Pro for creating backlinks and thus traffic from rising SERP and such!

By the way are Blog Carnivals still a viable source for SEO of your site?

Hi Jack,
You have some very valuble and good stuff as well as advice here but I would like to also make a suggestion. I strongly suggest glyphius.com. It takes the guesswork out of everything. I can't praise it enough and a awesome tool for the beginner as well!
